We were honored to have Cherrie Wellons who lives across the street from the Village, attend our recent fundraiser. We were even more honored and touched when she stood up to address the guest in support of our efforts!
Read her entire speech below.
“I live across the street from the Hub City Village. At first, I had some reservations about the prospect of this type of housing project. However, as the construction has progressed, and I continue to learn about the plans and opportunities this community will provide for some of the most vulnerable citizens in Albany, it has become a welcome and exciting solution to a very real and concerning problem.
It is not only a provision of shelter but offers help to overcome some of the issues that may have contributed to a homeless person’s situation. I have observed many people in our city who have struggled with physical health and/or mental or emotional difficulties, causing them to fall into a “gap” between succeeding in our society, or not. Often, they have difficulties because they almost function well enough to make it, but sometimes they don’t.
The opportunities being offered at Hub City Village can effectively give these people the skills needed to make it over that gap. These are not converted “storage sheds”. These are complete, energy efficient homes. I really don’t believe Hub City to be a handout, but a hand up.”
